On April 9, 2012, National Geographic's "Photo of the Day" selection was this striking aerial image submitted by photographer Adriana Franco. The fractal patterns against the white background create a mysterious composition of which the complexity can only be appreciated from an elevated perspective.

The veiny geometry that appears to be stripped branches of trees or the Lichtenberg figures of a lightning strike are actually patterns left behind by rivers having run their course and drying out within the saline desert of Baja, California.
