Unfortunately, the path to overthrowing Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista was not a bloodless one, as this Pulitzer Prize-winning image by photographer Andrew Lopez captures so poignantly.

From the caption:
"5/2/60 - New York: United Press International Newspictures Staff Photographer Andrew Lopez has won the 1960 Pulitzer Prize for Photography for a picture series on Cuban executions, it was announced 5/2. Photo below, one of the series, shows former Batista Army Cpl. Jose Rodriguez (C) receiving last rites from a priest at Matanzas, Cuba, 1/17/59, as a guard ties his hands. Sentenced to death for war crimes, Rodriguez faced a firing squad immediately after trial by a Castro tribunal that lasted exactly one minute."
